Polignano a
Mare
The fantastic
old town sited
on its rocky
promontory is
always going
to be the star
attraction of
this ancient
town which was
probably
founded
originally and
part of
Ancient Greece
as the town of
"Neapolis", in
fact many
people still
see a Greek
flavour to the
design and
layout of the
town.
Another
popular outing
here is to
take a
pleasure boat
trip to view
some of the
vast sea caves
that penetrate
right under
and into the
old town.
There are many
other places
within driving
distance of
Polignano,
with castles,
beautiful
towns,
historic
sites,
museums, kids
stuff etc to

If you've
enjoyed your
visit to
Polignano a
Mare, you may
like to visit
the ancient
hill town of
Ostuni
which is just
30 miles
further south
(an easy 40
minutes drive)
along the
coast road, as
its historic
centre is
completely
intact
including the
walls.
Just three
quarters of an
hours pleasant
drive (approx
20 miles)
inland from
Polignano is
the very
unusual trulli
precincts of
Alberobello,
recognised
world-wide,
they are an
enchanting
place to visit
and worth the
journey.
Going south
along the SS16
then turning
inland at
Fasano on the
SS172dir will
take you to
the beautiful
hill top town
centre of
Martina Franca
with its
baroque style
buildings and
palaces.
South-east 25
miles away is
the village of
Cisternino,
astride a hill
in the Valle
d'Itria with
an old quarter
where time
seems to have
stopped still.
Down the coast
20 minutes
away (11
miles) are the
ruins of the
Roman town of
Egnazia and
gorge of cave
dwellings
around
Fasano.
If you drive
south in a few
minutes you
will pass the
town of
Monopoli,
not as
attractive as
Polignano, but
still worth an
afternoon of
your time.
